As a soloist, member of numerous ensembles, and a music educator since 2012, Isaac ‘Deacon Izzy’ Bell is shaping the future of DC music from inside the classroom and out. Hailing from Gastonia, North Carolina, Bell began his musical development in the church. He came to Washington in 2008 to hone his music composition and trombone performance talents at Howard University. While at Howard he was a member of the universities jazz ensemble, marching band, trombone ensemble, orchestra and student group GWN. He would also become a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. as well as Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity of America, Inc. Since then, he has contributed his composition, production, instrumental, and vocal talents to numerous DC based and International acts including The JoGo Project, DuPont Brass, Mark Meadows and The Movement, and Chrysis Entertainment. In 2013 he joined the teaching staff at City Arts and Prep PCS and served as a music/band instructor there for six years before beginning his tenure at Friendship Public Charter School Armstrong Campus. Many of his former students have gone on to attend Duke Ellington School for the Arts and many other top performing DC High Schools. Beginning in 2018 he leant his voice to the DC lottery for their DC 2 and $30 scratch off ticket game jingles and continues voice acting for them regularly. He performs extensively throughout the DMV, Philadelphia, NYC, and North Carolina regions, but still manages to make his students success a top priority saying, “Kids deserve every opportunity to be all that they want to be.” His vast influences include Quincy Jones, Wyclef Jean, Lauryn Hill, A Tribe Called Quest, Outkast, George Clinton, James Brown, Dave Matthews Band, Big KRIT and Kirk Franklin. With a complete solo EP: “Sermon No. 1: The Motivation” as well as the singles “Issa Bae” and “Shank Redemption”, Deacon Izzy is poised to explode on the national scene.
